CoPilot for ARINC 708

CoPilot 708 is part of the CoPilot Family-a comprehensive software environment that interfaces to Ballard's MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, ARINC 708/453, and ARINC 664/AFDX hardware products. CoPilot uses and features common to all of those protocols are summarized in the CoPilot Key Features page. The examples below illustrate some of the features unique to the ARINC 708 databus.

Using CoPilot and one or more of Ballard Technology's ARINC 708 boards, users can easily analyze databus activity, quickly set up and run Bus Controller schedules, simulate Remote Terminals, and monitor, analyze, and export bus activity. While communicating with the databus, users can enter and display data in engineering units through simulated flight instruments or tabular displays. Data field and interpreter definitions can be saved to and retrieved from a user-maintained database. Strip chart displays, advanced monitor display features, and CoPilot's software playback mode simplify data discovery. The Automated Test Environment (ATE) implemented in the latest release opens up exciting new possibilities for creating and exporting certified test 708 procedures.

Other features include auto detection of remote terminals, error injection/detection, filtering of data before or after capture, and a moving map display. Ballard's exclusive scripting control allows CoPilot to be customized with user-coded or example scripts.

ARINC 708

ARINC 708 describes the characteristics of an airborne pulse Doppler weather radar system. Display data and system mode/status information are transmitted over the 708 databus from the Transmitter-Receiver (T-R) unit to the Control/Display Unit (CDU).

ARINC 708 is an adaptation of the proposed, but never approved, ARINC 453 databus.

Receive and Record

  • Receive and record display data from the 708 bus
  • Configure various record and capture options
  • Received data is stored for future analysis
  • Datasets can be modified and used for transmission or for software playback analysis
  • Saved datasets can be shared between CoPilot projects

transmit

  • Transmit recorded or user-generated files onto the databus
  • Graphically monitor the databus in real time while transmitting
  • Set transmission frequency in hertz (Hz)
  • Loop the dataset continuously or a specified number of times
  • Inject errors by modifying and retransmitting a saved dataset

software playback

In software playback mode, a dataset is played back through the software without transmitting on the databus. This allows the dataset to be analyzed, modified, and examined in detail. When software playback mode is engaged, the playback toolbar appears in both Radar view and List view.

  • Observe and control playback in Radar view or List view
  • Adjust the speed of replayed data through the slider control or buttons
  • Step forward or backwards through records while viewing them graphically
  • Pause and resume software playback with the pause button
  • Pause at breakpoints set on individual records
  • Customizable start and end indexes
  • The playback tool bar buttons allow the user to ignore all breakpoints and navigate between breakpoints and the start and end index

display data

Users can view data in real time while receiving, transmitting, or in software playback mode. Toggle between the two display formats: Radar view and List view. Both views may be filtered using the Data Accept field. Configure each display to facilitate analysis. Data can be viewed and modified in engineering units or raw hexadecimal format.

Radar View

  • Configure the grid, colors, fonts, and other properties to optimize the display
  • Specify the scan range--even increase it to 360 degrees!
  • Split the radar to simultaneously view the right and left radar images or filter the display using the Data Accept field
  • Customize the display of fault indicator lights
  • Adjustable refresh rate accommodates the processing power of the host computer

List View

  • Customize the display setting in List display for detailed analysis of recorded data
  • Display or hide range bin data
  • Search datasets by alerts, fields, range bins, bookmarks, or other criteria
  • Move through the list in user-defined steps
  • Bookmark individual records for analysis or searching
  • Edit messages individually (see figure at left)
  • View and edit header data in engineering units or raw hexadecimal format

combine with ARINC 429

  • CoPilot software can host multiple protocols and multiple Ballard boards in a single project
  • With the addition of a Ballard 429 board keyed for CoPilot 429, users can also control a T-R unit
  • Paired with ARINC 429 hardware, the T-R unit can be controlled with virtual instruments
