Easy-To-Use

The USB 1553 family of pocket-sized USB adapters enable computers to communicate with, simulate, test, and monitor 1553 equipment and systems. These rugged USB 2.0 peripherals feature extensive MIL-STD-1553 functionality and are compatible with virtually all modern PC laptop, desktop, tablet, and netbook computers. They support maximum data throughput on all 1553 channels and have a large 32 MB built-in memory. All power necessary for operation is provided via the single USB port. Plug and Play and Hot Swap features make it easy to install and move between computers.

Full-Featured and Powerful

A variety of models are available with different channel counts and capabilities. Depending on the model, each 1553 channel may be either single-function, multi-function, or bus monitor only. Single-function channels can be configured in software as either a Bus Controller (BC), a Bus Monitor (BM), or up to 32 Remote Terminals (RTs). Multi-function channels have protocol error injection capability and can simultaneously be a BC, BM, and up to 32 RTs. All versions include eight avionics level input/output discretes and IRIG time synchronization/generation. Two LEDs indicate power and bus traffic by default, or can be controlled by your software.

You can develop your own software applications with the included BTIDriver API. Or, use Ballard's optional CoPilot software, which provides powerful and easy-to-use interactive tools for databus test, analysis, and simulation. See the "Software" tab for more information.

CoPilot

The easiest way to use the MIL-STD-1553 functionality of your USB 1553 device is with CoPilot, Ballard's Windows-based software. CoPilot is an intuitive, interactive program that simplifies the testing and simulation of MIL-STD-1553 systems. In CoPilot, you can simulate the Bus Controller, up to 32 RTs, and monitor, record, and export bus activity. Data can be entered and displayed in engineering units and data definitions may be saved to the 1553 database. CoPilot features include virtual instruments, strip charts, moving map displays, scripting, and software playback mode. CoPilot also supports ARINC 429, ARINC 708, ARINC 664/AFDX, and serial. You can add CoPilot at anytime. However, you will receive a discount when you purchase CoPilot bundled with the hardware.

 

BTIDriver API

Users can develop their own software applications with the included BTIDriver API. With only a few function calls, a program can operate the USB 1553 and process messages to and from the avionics databuses. Functions include routines for transmitting, receiving, scheduling, recording, time-tagging, and manipulating data. The USB 1553 can use applications developed for other Ballard devices. Code migrates seamlessly from BTIDriver compatible devices or through a translation driver from older Ballard devices.

Translation DLL

The translation DLL (included) makes it easy to convert applications previously written for other Ballard products to run on this family of products.
